By The Parlour SG | Kovan, Singapore | Hair Extensions Aftercare
Singapore's climate is one of the most demanding environments for hair extensions on the planet. Humidity above 80 percent, temperatures consistently over 30 degrees, chlorinated pools year-round, and the inevitable sweaty commute between air-conditioned buildings and the heat outside, none of this is kind to any extension method.
The good news is that with the right aftercare routine, professional Remy human hair extensions hold up well in Singapore's conditions. Most early extension failures come down to the same avoidable mistakes: the wrong shampoo, incorrect brushing technique, and not knowing what to do around water.
This is the aftercare guide we give every extensions client at The Parlour. It applies across all methods, tape-in, nano ring, and keratin bond, with specific notes where the method makes a difference.

The Most Important Rule: Use Sulphate-Free Shampoo

If you do only one thing from this guide, make it this. Sulphate-based shampoos, which includes most standard supermarket shampoos, strip moisture aggressively and weaken adhesive bonds faster than any other factor. For tape-in extensions specifically, regular sulphate-based washing can cut your refit interval from eight weeks to four.
Sulphate-free shampoos clean effectively without the aggressive detergent action. They maintain the moisture balance of Remy human hair, which, unlike your natural hair, cannot receive moisture from your scalp. Once Remy hair dries out, it does not recover the way natural hair can. Keeping it moisturised through the right shampoo is non-negotiable.
The Parlour stocks the Kevin Murphy Hydrate-Me Wash and Smooth.Again Wash, both sulphate-free and formulated for high-humidity environments. Ask your stylist which formula suits your hair type at your appointment. |
When you shampoo, work the product through the lengths and ends in a downward motion, never pile hair on top of your head and scrub. This causes tangling at the bond points that is difficult to reverse.
Brushing: The Detail Most People Get Wrong
Brushing extensions incorrectly is the most common cause of premature shedding and matting, and it is entirely avoidable. The rule is simple: always start from the ends and work upward in sections. Never pull a brush from root to tip through your full length in one stroke.
Use a soft-bristle extension brush or a wide-tooth comb, both are gentler on bond and attachment points than standard paddle brushes. Brush at least twice daily: once in the morning and once before bed. If you wake up with tangles, work through them gently before washing, not after.
Do not brush extensions when wet. Wet Remy hair is more elastic and more prone to damage at the bond points. If you need to detangle after washing, use a wide-tooth comb only, and work section by section from the ends up. |
Sleeping in Extensions
Eight hours of friction against a cotton pillowcase every night adds up quickly. Two habits prevent most sleep-related extension damage:
First, loosely braid your hair before bed. A single loose plait or two braids keeps the hair contained and reduces the friction and tangling that comes from moving during sleep. Avoid tight braids or ponytails, these create tension at the bond points over time.
Second, switch to a silk or satin pillowcase. Cotton creates friction; silk and satin allow hair to slide rather than snag. This single change noticeably extends the life of extensions and reduces morning tangles for most clients within the first week.
Water: Pools, Rain, and the Daily Singapore Reality

Extensions and Singapore's daily weather interact in ways that depend on your method.
For tape-in extensions
Chlorine and saltwater are the main risks. Both weaken the adhesive bond over time with repeated exposure. If you swim regularly, keep your hair in a bun or swim cap, and rinse with fresh water immediately after. Dry the bond area gently but thoroughly after every swim, wet adhesive under sustained warmth from Singapore's heat is the scenario that weakens tape-ins fastest.
For nano ring and keratin bond extensions
Both methods handle water better than tape-ins because there is no adhesive involved. Swimming is generally safe, but the same post-swim rinse is recommended to remove chlorine or salt before it dries into the hair shaft. Pay particular attention to drying the bond area, sustained moisture at any attachment point, regardless of method, increases the risk of slippage over time.
Rain in Singapore is warm and frequent. Getting caught in a downpour is not a major concern for any extension method, the issue is not getting wet, it is staying wet. Dry your hair fully after any significant exposure to water before sleeping. |
Heat Styling in Singapore

Remy human hair can be heat styled, blow-dried, straightened, and curled, the same way as natural hair. The same rules apply: always use a heat protectant spray before any heat tool, keep flat irons and curling wands away from bond and attachment points, and avoid using the highest heat setting routinely.
In Singapore's climate, the daily blow-dry many clients need to manage humidity is not a problem for Remy hair as long as heat protectant is used. The bond area on tape-ins and keratin bonds needs particular care, direct heat from a flat iron over an adhesive bond point will soften and weaken the bond over time.
Use heat protectant every time — apply to lengths and ends, not the roots or bond area
Keep flat irons at least 2cm above bond points on tape-in and keratin bond extensions
Blow-dry on medium heat rather than maximum — the difference in drying time is minimal, the difference in long-term hair condition is significant
The Product Rule: What to Avoid Near Bond Points
Certain products break down adhesive or coat the bond area in a way that causes slippage. The following should not be applied directly to the roots or bond points on any extension method:
Oil-based products, serums, and treatments — apply to mid-lengths and ends only
Dry shampoo — spray at the roots but avoid the bond area and brush through before it sits on the attachment point
Heavy conditioner or hair masks — focus on lengths and ends; avoid the top 5 to 8cm near the scalp
For the mid-lengths and ends of your extensions, moisture and conditioning products are beneficial, Remy hair needs moisture from external sources since it is not connected to your scalp. A leave-in conditioner or lightweight serum on the lengths daily keeps extensions looking fresh between washes.
When to Come Back In
Your refit schedule is set by your method and your hair growth rate, not by how the extensions look. Extensions that appear fine but are significantly grown out put stress on your natural hair at the root, which is where damage accumulates. Do not push refit intervals too far.
Tape-in extensions: back every 6 to 8 weeks
Nano ring extensions: repositioning every 8 to 12 weeks
Keratin bond extensions: refit every 3 to 4 months
If anything feels uncomfortable or you notice unusual shedding before your scheduled refit, come in early. Extensions that slip or loosen before the refit date are usually a sign of a product or washing issue, catching it early protects your natural hair.
All refit and removal appointments at The Parlour are handled by Katie, our certified Bellami extension specialist.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do hair extensions last in Singapore?
With correct aftercare, tape-in extensions last six to eight weeks before refitting, nano ring extensions eight to twelve weeks before repositioning, and keratin bond extensions three to four months. The Remy human hair itself can last much longer, up to twelve months or more with sulphate-free washing and careful heat styling.
The main factors that shorten extension lifespan in Singapore specifically are sulphate-based shampoos, chlorine exposure without rinsing, and sleeping with loose hair on cotton pillowcases. All three are easy to manage once you know what to watch for.
Can I swim with hair extensions in Singapore?
Yes, but the method affects what precautions you need.
Nano ring and keratin bond extensions handle swimming better than tape-in extensions because no adhesive is involved.
For tape-in extensions, chlorinated or saltwater weakens the adhesive bond with repeated exposure, keep hair in a bun or swim cap, and rinse immediately after swimming.
For all methods, dry the attachment area thoroughly after swimming. Leaving bond points wet in Singapore's warm humidity is one of the most common causes of early slippage across all extension methods.
What shampoo should I use with hair extensions?
Use sulphate-free shampoo exclusively. Sulphate-based shampoos strip moisture from Remy human hair and weaken adhesive bonds on tape-in extensions.
At The Parlour, we stock Kevin Murphy sulphate-free shampoos that are suitable for Singapore's climate and for use with all extension methods.
Apply shampoo in a downward motion through the lengths, never pile hair on top of your head and scrub, which causes tangling at bond points.
Can I use hair oil or serum on extensions?
Yes, on the mid-lengths and ends, not on the roots or bond area.
Oil-based products applied near bond points can cause adhesive to break down on tape-in extensions and create a coating around nano ring or keratin bond attachment points that leads to slippage.
Apply serums and leave-in conditioners from mid-shaft to ends. Remy hair benefits from regular moisture application to the lengths since it cannot draw moisture from your scalp the way natural hair does.
How do I sleep with hair extensions?
Loosely braid your hair before bed, one or two soft plaits, to prevent tangling and reduce friction at bond points while sleeping. Avoid tight styles or ponytails, which create tension at attachment points overnight.
Switching from a cotton pillowcase to silk or satin reduces friction significantly and is one of the most effective changes you can make for long-term extension health.
